The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
