Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
