The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
